How to Safely Clean Your Gutters

If you’re a homeowner, then you undoubtedly know that there are several responsibilities that you need to take care of. You need to maintain your lawn and backyard, you need to keep up with pest control, and you need to regularly clean out your gutters, particularly if they aren’t equipped with gutter guards. And cleaning out your gutters can be quite the dangerous task! Read on to find out how you can best clean out your gutters—while being extremely safe at the same time.

In order to begin the process of cleaning out your gutters, you’ll need to gather together some supplies. Grab a ladder, an easy-to-carry container that will hold all the gutter muck, a pair of gloves, a garden hose, and a small hand rake. Keep in mind that your debris container is sure to get heavy as you fill it up, so you may want to use small plastic bags so that they don’t become overwhelmingly heavy.

Now just follow these steps:

•    Lean your ladder against the side of your house, about an arm’s length away from a corner downspout.
•    Tuck your plastic bags in your back pocket, hold your rake in your hand, and climb on up the ladder.
•    Once you’ve reached the top, use your hand rake to scoop the gutter debris away from the downspout. Be sure that none of that debris finds its way into the downspout’s opening, or else you could be facing a nasty clog.
•    Grab one handful of gutter muck at a time and drop the debris into one of your plastic bags. Once the bag is full, tie its end into a knot and drop it on the ground below.
•    After you’ve completely cleaned out that section, climb down, move your ladder, and repeat the steps until your gutters are sparkling clean.

This is the most common way to safely clean out your gutters. What kinds of tips can you think of to share with fellow homeowners?
